Q: Tell us about Minimalist Parenting; what is this book about?
The subtitle of the book – Enjoy Modern Family Life More By Doing Less – is a simple and to the point description! Our parenting culture is highly tuned to more, more, more – but of the stressful variety. Minimalist Parenting is all about giving you permission to step off the more treadmill and tune into what matters most to you and your family. In the book, my co-author Asha and I offer guidance on how to shift your perspective and practice so there’s more of what you want in life and less of what you don’t.
Q: What led you to write this book?
I’ve been writing Boston Mamas for nearly seven years, and in that time I’ve heard so many parents express their frustration with, and paralysis over, the culture of more. I had the idea for the book a few years ago, shortly after speaking on a panel at BlissDom, and while I was working on carving out my own minimalist parenting lifestyle. I drafted the outline for the book on the plane ride home from Nashville and bought the domain name for Minimalist Parenting not long after I landed!
Q: Why do you think this book is compelling, given the many parenting titles out there?
Well, of course I’m partial, but I think this book is so, so special! First, Asha and I wrote the book to address both shifts in perspective and practice – because both are necessary to make lasting change. Second, the book concepts are brought to life not only by our own anecdotes but by those culled from our communities – it was such an honor to share the brilliance and clever solutions of other parents. And third, we’ve been told many times that the book reads like a conversation with trusted and dear friends – that we’re communicating on the same level because we’re working through the same challenges as other parents every day. Take a look at the book trailer; we hear it’s made a lot of people cry (in a good way!):
Q: The book releases March 19 – what are you doing while you wait for that exciting date?
Well, I’d be remiss not to point people to MinCamp, the free companion workshop to our book. MinCamp kicks off March 1 and Asha and I have poured our hearts into this and crafted what we think will be a simple and doable yet incredibly impacting 14-day virtual camp. We’re so excited about it – I hope your community will sign up! Also, Violet turns 2 the day before the book release. So I will probably be eating cupcakes and sobbing like a baby while I sing Happy Birthday to her on March 18! It blows my mind how fast the time goes.
Q: And finally, do you want to tell folks about our party?
Oh my goodness, YES! I’m so grateful to Isis Parenting for hosting the Boston launch party and love that it will benefit a cause that we both feel passionate about: the March of Dimes. The event is Thursday, March 28 at 6:30pm at The Shops at Prudential in front of the Isis center and it will be an awesome opportunity to get out, meet other parents, and support a great cause. I plan on giving a short presentation and then will be on hand to give high fives, answer questions, and sign books. You can get your tickets here. I can’t wait to see you there!
